Homeless Curfew

Jackson Mayor Frank Melton has extended his emergency declaration to include a curfew on homeless people starting Friday July 14th at ten p.m.  Melton says he has ordered Police to pick up homeless people and take them to the Champion Center gymnasium on Hattiesburg Street in west Jackson between Lynch St. and Highway 80.

Melton says, "We will feed them and house them until we can get a grip on this problem and they will help us clean up the city of Jackson, by picking up paper and cutting grass, on public properties."

The mayor would not answer questions at the news conference, but his spokesman Commander Tyrone Lewis said later the homeless "will not be arrested unless there is probable cause that that they have committed a crime." Melton did say the gym has 50 beds.
