Legal Symposium Discusses Insurance

About 500 people gather for Mississippi College School of Law's legal symposium Tuesday at the Marriott in downtown Jackson.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood joined acclaimed Attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs and others for a panel discussion on insurance topics.

Scruggs is suing insurance companies for denying thousands of policy holders' claims after Hurricane Katrina. He lost his most recent case, when a federal judge ruled that the policies do not cover damage from flood waters or storm surge.

But Scruggs says it is a step in the right direction..."Up until that ruling in those cases of mixed wind and water damage were trying to skate out on obscure exclusion. Now they will no longer be able to do that. There are tens of thousands of families that have a chance now."

Scruggs is representing nearly three-thousand policy holders, most of whom are Southern Mississippi residents.
