Cell Doors Malfunction at Rankin County Detention Center

Hinds County may have to spend up to two million dollars to repair cell doors at its Raymond Detention Center. Tuesday, cell doors swung open in a wing that houses 198 inmates, causing a fight among prisoners.

Officials say the facility has become a public safety concern ,and Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps says all state inmates housed there will be moved to the Rankin County Correctional Facility.

Sheriff Malcolm McMillan says that could cost the county 1-million dollars. Supervisor Doug Anderson disagrees that the cost will actually be that high.

Anderson has called a special meeting for Thursday to discuss the issue.  He says he will propose that the jail be privitized.
