COPY-Keeping the Public in the Dark

By Dennis Smith, News Director

Thumbs up to Rankin County Sheriff Ronnie Pennington for capturing a convict who broke out of his jail earlier this week.

Good police work by the sheriff finally tracked John Myles in south Jackson several hours later.

But, here's a concern.

Rankin authorities refused to confirm the breakout to WLBT news even when we knew something big was happening.

A producer did an on-line search and found that while Myles was serving time for grand larceny, of more concern, was that he is a two time sex offender, including being a child rapist.

Brandon schools were locked down, but nobody else was told, including the media.

The Department of Corrections did put out a release saying they were looking for an escaped thief.

From my Point of View, I think it's better to let people know that an escaped child rapist is in their midst rather than being kept in the dark.

The sheriff has since dealt with the jailers.

As for Myles, the day after he was caught, he was shipped off to Parchman.

Let's hope he stays a while.
