Three On Your Side Investigates: Hazlehurst High Brawl

WLBT News has received numerous complaints from parents and concerned citizens about the Hazlehurst Public School System. On February 23, a viewer e-mailed Three On Your Side for help saying some kids are out of control.

Last year there was a knifing at Hazlehurst High School, a kid got caught with a gun, and two bus drivers were fired for drinking during an elementary school trip.

WLBT was e-mailed disturbing video of an on-campus fight.  It was from an anonymous viewer. The subject, "Dis is how Hazlehurst High School get down." The viewer urged us to check a video web link, saying "What you are about to see goes on daily at this school and we need help."

The tapes unleases school violence on Youtube.  A female student attacks another girl right outside the lunchroom. The crowd quickly gathers egging the girls on.

A post on the website claims the fight broke out between a 12th grader and a 9th grader, allegedly because the younger student picked on the seniors' little sister. This assault allegedly occurred two days ago during school.

Someone who appears to be wearing a suit tries to break up the fight.  Many are questioning if  the knockdown- dragout was staged by students. School officials don't think so and now these fearless teens are facing disciplinary action.

The Assistant Principle at Hazlehurst High refused to talk with us about the incident. But we did get a statement from the Interim Superintendant of Hazlehurst City Schools. Jay Norals said, "The principal thought it was real. It's a matter we are still dealing with. Disciplinary action is being taken against people. We dealt with it on the day it occurred and contacted the State Department of Education."

We ask if these outbreaks are common. The Superintendant said he's had more than his share of fights recently.
