Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Mississippi Valley Are NIT Bound

Ole Miss and Mississippi State had to settle for home games in the NIT, and Mississippi Valley State will get a chance to knock off an instate rival.

Mississippi State (18-13) earned one of four No. 1 seeds in the 32-team tournament and will host MVSU in the first round. The Delta Devils (18-15) earned a bid when they won the Southwestern Athletic Conference's regular-season title but fell to Jackson State in the tournament championship game.

The North Region game will mark the first time the two teams have played since 2001. Mississippi State won the two schools' only matchup.

South Region fourth-seed Ole Miss (20-12) will play fifth-seed Appalachian State (25-7) in the first round. The Mountaineers won the Southern Conference's North Division.

They were a potential NCAA draw with victories over Vanderbilt and Virginia, but fell in their tournament semifinals. Ole Miss Coach Andy Kennedy knows little about the Mountaineers beyond their reputation.

"We'll scurry around like I'm sure they're scurrying and try to come up with some tape and figure out as much about them as possible," Kennedy said. "It's a pretty quick turn."
