2007 Sunshine Teacher of the Year : Carol Baird of Mount Salus Christian School

Monday was a special day for a lady who has dedicated her life to teaching children in the metro area. Carol Baird of Mount Salus Christian School in Clinton was named Sunshine Teacher of the Year.

WLBT meteorologist Paul Williams and representatives from Bumpers Drive-In and other supporters visited her second grade class Monday morning. She won several prizes including flowers, a plaque, a weekend getaway and $5000.

She says she will give half of the money to the school and half to church.

"It's just a wonderful commendation of the commitment that teachers have...not just me but all teachers," said Baird.  "I really want to accept it for all teachers. I love teaching. It's a life-long career that I've loved doing. I've loved working with the children, and these are the most wonderful children in the world."

Ms. Baird came to Mount Salus last year after retiring from Jackson public schools. She taught first grade at John Hopkins Elementary for 38 years.

The person who nominated her for Sunshine Teacher of the Year says every day is a special day with Ms. Baird, because she goes far beyond the regular lessons.
