New Comers and Veterans Begin Quest for Crown

There are 47 young women competing for the crown of Miss Mississippi 2007 this week in Vicksburg. There are newcomers and veterans taking the stage at the Vicksburg Convention Center as the pageant celebrates it's 50th anniversary.

Among the veterans this year second runner up to Taryn Foshee, Miss Mississippi 2006, Tara Tutor, who is Miss Pontotoc. She is 23 years old and a graduate from Ole Miss. This is her fifth year to compete at Miss Mississippi.

"I graduated this past May with a degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. And I just completed my first year of Pharmacy school, so I'll be back there in the fall, if not Miss Mississippi."

This is the third year for Rachel Shannon. She is 21 years old and  from Terry. The senior Interior Design major at USM, was 4th runner up in last year's pageant.

"The very first time I watched a pageant on TV was the year Susan Akin won Miss America, and so I have kind of felt like its been with me the 21 years of my life. It would truly just be a great experience."

Among the newcomers this year. Miss Tougaloo, Jasmine Hughes. She is a 21 year old senior. This is the second year Tougaloo has had a representative at Miss Mississippi.

"What drew me to pageants is the scholarship opportunity and the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally."

Miss Rankin County, Katherine Barkett is a sophomore at Ole Miss with a major in Musical Theatre.

"I would love to perform on Broadway and if not Broadway I would love to tour. That's what I really want to do right out of college is audition for musical tours."

The big question this year is who will join the 49 other young women who have become Miss Mississippi. Out of 47 young women only one will hear her name called Saturday night, for Miss Mississippi 2007.
