Final Night Of Fun For Summer Youth Campers

Mayor Frank Melton is back at his Jackson home tonight and he is not alone. He has a house full of teenagers enjoying the final night of a summer youth camp sponsored by Melton.

The 12 to 17-year-old boys are winding down with movies, swimming, basketball and other fun activity. This follows a week of sometimes intense exercise and religious training at Sophia Sutton Campground in Prentiss. Most of the 51 inner city youngsters have troubled pasts.

"I learned how to show respect and you know hat i'm saying, that the streets ain't nothing but trouble and you know what i'm saying, they told me how to, you know what i'm saying, obey...listen to what grown people tell you to do," says Courtez Monroe, 16-year-old camper.

"I think it was very successful. We didn't have a single fight. But i did have to spend a lot of time with a lot of kids. They have some very serious issues and i'll never be able to talk to you about those but i'm gonna deal with them because of what they've told me. I have learned more this week than what they have learned," says Mayor Frank Melton, Jackson.

Mayor Melton did not say whether he would sponsor the camp again next year but he did say he would stick with the kids who attended this camp.
