Hinds D.A. Faces Runoff with Robert Smith

The district attorney for Hinds County faces a runoff in two weeks.

Faye Peterson was not able to get a majority of the votes cast in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

Jackson attorney Robert Smith was a close second, apparently buoyed by an endorsement by former D.A. Ed Peters.

"I think the numbers show the voters in Hinds County want a change in the district attorney's office," Smith said Tuesday night. "I think our platform of effective leadership played well."

Peterson was first appointed to the D.A.'s office in 2001. She is the state's first African American female district attorney.
