All four candidates in the Ward One city council race formally introduced themselves to residents Thursday night. Dozens of people gathered at Christ United Methodist Church on Old Canton Road to learn about each candidate.
David Archie, John Ditto, Lenard Jenkins, and Jeff Weill spoke to voters on issues like crime, economic development, and community improvement.
"As your city councilman," said Archie, "I will be more visible, more accessible throughout the city...to address the problems that we're having."
"As a council person, my goal would be to fully support and staff and train our Jackson Police Department," said Ditto. "We have wonderful men and women on the police department, but we do not have enough resources for the department."
"I am running because I envision Jackson as being a model, urban community where children can go out and play," said Jenkins.
"I know the justice system," said Weill. "All the other candidates tonight have talked about crime. I have done something about it."
Audience members had the opportunity to submit questions for the candidates to answer.
The special election to replace Ben Allen on the council is set for Tuesday, August 14.
