Restaurant Inspections Have New Rating System

Mississippi's interim health officer says all the state's restaurants will be inspected by year's end, with a new ratings system.

The Health Department has dropped the old "pass-fail" ratings in favor of report card-style notations.

Restaurants that get an "a" rating have no violations -  "b" means the restaurant corrected critical violations before the inspector left -  "c" means a follow-up visit, usually within a couple of days, is required.

Correcting those violations moves the establishment up to a "b."

Doctor Ed Thompson says the criteria for health inspections have not changed,  and he says inspectors can close any restaurant if an immediate health threat is found.
