JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ The Division II Gulf South Conference suspended the Delta State and Henderson State coaches for one game today following Saturday's brawl in Cleveland.
Delta State's Ron Roberts and Henderson State's Scott Maxfield also were put on probation for two years yesterday among other penalties handed down by commissioner Nate Salant.
The brawl lasted three to four minutes following Delta State's 9-7 win and was broken up by police and coaches.
Salant says the investigation turned up reports of players swinging helmets during the fight and kicking players who were already down on the ground.
Officials said Henderson State fans were also harassed by Delta State fans and Salant called for security changes at the school.
Salant placed the blame for the brawl on Roberts and Maxfield.
Offensive coordinator Darrin Hicks will serve as coach during Saturday's game at Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Maxfield will serve his suspension during the Sept. 29 game against West Georgia.
