Sports Hall-of-Famer Killed in Wreck

Chunkin' Charlie Ward, a 1979 inductee into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, was killed in traffic accident in Brandon Thursday.

Ward and his wife, Reba, were traveling east on Interstate 20 near the Crossgates exit when they came up behind an 18-wheeler that had slowed because of mechanical problems. Ward ran off the road trying to miss the truck, but according to Brandon Police Chief Ken McBroom, he came back on to the highway and ran under the back of the truck.

Ward died shortly after being taken to the Rankin County Medical Center. His wife is at University Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately available.

Charlie Ward attended Copiah Lincoln Junior College from 1937-38 where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was captain and all-state quarterback for the state-championship football team and was an all state guard on the basketball team.

Ward moved on to Millsaps from 1938-41 where he again played three sports. Millsaps won the Dixie Conference Basketball Championship in 1940.

Ward lived in Pelahatchie.
