House and Senate Candidates Debate

Thursday night candidates in the state Senate District 29 and state House District 71 races squared off in a forum.

Residents gathered at the Richard Wright Library in Jackson to hear each candidate's platform.

Incumbent state Representative John Reeves is running against Adrienne Wooten in the House District 71 race. In the race for Senate District 29, Incumbent Senator Richard White is facing David Blount.

The candidates spoke on three key election issues: expanding identity theft prevention, health-related care in the home, and taxes on both tobacco and groceries.

Democratic candidate, Blount said, "In a poor state like Mississippi it's wrong to tax food at 7% this is the main difference between me and my opponent."

His Republican challenger, White said, "I'm concerned that if you take the food tax off without for sure the money to be coming in for our cities that they're gonna put it on your land tax."

The debate was sponsored by AARP.
