Governor Barbour Visits Elementary School

Governor Haley Barbour took a break from the campaign trail this morning to help serve lunch.

We found him handing out apples to students at Casey Elementary School in Jackson to celebrate healthy school lunch week.

Earlier, he gave the cafeteria manager a proclamation recognizing the special week, which was celebrated in schools across the country. Healthy school lunch week falls in line with the state's push to promote better health.

The healthy schools program that the legislature passed this year requires an average of 30 min/day of physical activity, 150 a week, 45 a week of health education, all of that's gottta be about nutrition, exercise, diet, don't use tobacco, don't use alcohol and don't use drugs.

The theme for healthy school lunch week is "vote for school lunch".

Casey held a special election, voting to name the school's adopted pet, a rabbit. Governor Barbour told us he voted for the name "spirit" over the other choices, "Casey" and "Snowbell".
