Community Opens For Adults With Retardation

By Wendy Suares

A first of its kind community for adults with mental retardation officially opened its doors Tuesday.  A ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated the completion of the first phase of SON Valley.

The Christian community is being developed by Baptist Homes on 80 acres in Madison County outside Canton. The land was donated by the family of former Miss Mississippi Taryn Foshee.

Residents have moved into the two new homes on the site. Each can accomodate 10 adults.

Eventually SON Valley will include a worship center, recreation center, town center, and nursing home.

"We just imagine an entire town here at SON Valley, an entire community where they can shop, live, and learn and have recreational opportunities," said Foshee, Miss Mississippi 2006.

There's already a waiting list for residents of SON Valley. There are more than 80 thousand Mississippians with mental retardation and related disorders.
