BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Copiah County deputies Friday were looking for a suspect in the shooting death of 53-year-old James Smith.
Sheriff Harold Jones said the Hazlehurst man was found dead in his front yard about 4:10 a.m. with a single gunshot wound to the head.
Authorities said Smith's car was stolen from the scene.
Lawmen later found a car submerged in Lake Lincoln matching the description and license plate number of the one Smith owned.
Jones said the suspect is a white male of medium build, 20 to 30 years old.
Smith's wife came home while the alleged car theft and shooting were in progress and was shot at but was not injured.
She called 911 from her vehicle.
