Icy Conditions Prove Hazardous on Roadways

Wintry weather is making for some dangerous driving conditions.   The icy weather has already been blamed for one traffic-related death in Grenada County. The Mississippi Department of Transportation suggests staying off the roads if possible.

MDOT has had crews out plaicng de-icing materials on roadways to keep them clear.      Madison Emergency Management is also not taking any chances.      Officials say they have crews sanding bridges in north Madison County where they could get some ice.

MDOT suggests limiting travel if possible, but here are some safety tips if you have to hit the road:

  • Slow down.
  • Buckle Up.
  • Be sure to leave plenty of room between you and other cars.
  • Remember, it takes more time to stop when the roads are slick.
  • Pack a winter-car kit with water, blankets, snacks, flashlights, jumper cables and more.

The hazardous weather conditions have prompted the MDOT to set up a hot line.
