Family and Friends Say Farewell to Soldiers

A Mississippi Army National Guard unit is headed to our nation's capitol to protect America's skies.

A sendoff ceremony was held for more than 100 members of the First Battalion, 204th Air Defense Artillery based in Newton.

The unit is gearing up to leave for a 42-day training in Fort Bliss, Texas before heading to Washington, D.C.

Family and friends said their emotional good-byes before the soldiers left for a 12-month mission.

This is the second deployment for this unit since the September 11th attack.

"Since 9-11 we've developed a way to defend that threat and we're a part of that, a critical part of that and that's what we've been trained to do and we we'll go to Washington and execute that mission," said Commander Less White.

The unit first deployed to Washington, D.C. back in May of 2003.
