Waste Description of Project: One class each day is assigned as the "Litter-Getters". That class receives the Litter-Getter resource box that contains items needed to collect trash (gloves/bags). They spend approximately 15 min. in the afternoon picking up trash on the campus. Through this game night, we are able to reach parents and other community members and inform them of our efforts to keep the environment litter free.

Additional Information on your project (Optional):

This project is part of our CHARACTER COUNTS! initiative. While the children are participating as a Litter-Getter, they are demonstrating character traits of trustworthiness, responsibility, fairness, citizenship, and caring. They work together as a team to keep our environment litter free. We would like to eventually get into recycling of items that are picked up, but at the present time our school has no money to purchase recycle receptacles. We are hoping to obtain grant money in the future so that we may expand our efforts to include recycling.

What are the benefits of your Project:

The benefits of this project include a more clean and safe environment in which children can work and play. There is a reduction of litter going into ditches, streets, woods, and surrounding areas. There is a noticeable difference in the appearance of the campus since this project began. It is much more clean and attractive. This project also give students a meaningful way to contribute to keeping the earth free of litter.

What have you learned from your Project:

The students have learned to appreciate a cleaner and more safe environment. They have learned to cooperate with one another for the common good of all that come in contact with our school campus. The staff at school has seen a reduction of litter on campus. We have also learned that children are ready and willing to participate and excited about contributing in a meaningful way to keep our earth healthy.
