Who Tracks Hurricanes?

Hurricanes are tracked by people called meteorologists. Meteorologists go to special schools where they learn about different kinds of weather. Meteorologists use computers and “satellites” to track hurricanes. Satellites are like cameras that take pictures of hurricanes from outer space. Satellites can show meteorologists where a hurricane is headed next.

Meteorologists work in many different places. Some even work on TV!

Meteorologist Paul Williams, Meteorologist Barbie Bassett, Meterorologist Keller Watts adn and Weathercaster Walt Grayson work for WLBT 3 in Jack son, Mississippi. Their job is to tell you what the weather will be like. Sometimes, they use special definitions to let you know if a hurricane will be moving into your town.

Here are some of the definitions that you may hear when meteorologists talk about hurricanes:

Tropical Storm Watch- This means that a tropical storm might be moving close to you in the next day or two.

Tropical Storm Warning- This means that a tropical storm is expected to move into your area in less than a day.

Hurricane Watch- This means that a hurricane might move close to you in the next day or two.

Hurricane Warning- This means that a hurricane is expected to move into your area in less than a day.

Hurricanes are very hard to track. Sometimes, hurricanes don’t move where we think they will move. Just because a hurricane warning has been made for your town, there is still a chance that the hurricane may miss you.
