Harper, Taylor, Thompson win congressional races

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Republican Gregg Harper of Pearl has won Mississippi's open 3rd District U.S. House seat, defeating Democrat Joel Gill of Pickens.

Long-time Democratic incumbents Bennie Thompson and Gene Taylor also won Tuesday night, easily defeating lesser-known opponents.

One other race, a rematch between Democrat U.S. Rep. Travis Childers and Republican Greg Davis, was too close to call.

Harper will represent the seat in central Mississippi that's been held by Republican Chip Pickering for the last 12 years.

Pickering didn't seek for re-election.

Harper is a former Rankin County Republican chairman and long-time GOP volunteer. He was favored to win as Gill had run a low-key campaign.

In the 2nd District, Thompson easily defeated little-known Republican challenger Richard Cook. Thompson was first elected in 1993.

Taylor beat John McCay, a Republican minister, to retain the 4th District seat he's held since 1989.
