A new study shows telephone based stop smoking "quitlines" really help people kick the habit. As marsha thompson reports in medical matters, the partnership for a healthy Mississippi wants to make sure tobacco users are aware that professional help is just a phone call away. Smoking cuts an average of seven years off a personal life. Other's die prematurely from tobacco related diseases. Quitting tobacco is hard but millions are winning the fight. A new study of 32-hundred smokers compared success rates of people using-self-help material and people who used self help materials plus telephone counseling to stop smoking. "is this the tobacco free hotline, and you help people who are trying to quit smoking, great." they found those who used the quitlines had double the success rates of others. Study participants who used the quitlines had up to seven over-the-phone counseling sessions. The higher smoking abstinence rates held for as long as twelve months. Mississippians can get free consultations tobacco education, and treatment.
